CRITICAL REVIEW

Zoe Băicoianu grew in the French artistic ambiance in-between wars (she debuts at Paris, in 1931) and her sculpture descends from the classic modernism that dominated that period. This explains her interest in the balanced expression of the human body and the respect for corporal integrity. Maternity (1938) is an attempt to give more expressivity and emotion to a sculpture oriented especially towards configuring harmonious shapes. Her works in the 1950s are confined to the limits of the realist-socialist iconography. In the decorative works she did after 1960 there is a preeminent interest in the variation of techniques and materials, with their expressive potential. Zoe Băicoianu experiments especially with ceramics and glass, both for functional objects and for the parietal bigger decoration.
