CRITICAL REVIEW

Sculptor of the old generation, trained at the arts academy in Bucharest, who later emigrated to the United States of America, but not before opening a few personal exhibitions in Bucharest, Spiru Sabiescu is certainly a post-brancusi artist, one that continues in his art that genuine return to ancient symbolism, to the tradition reinvested with new meanings, from Modernity’s perspective, to a simple form, carrying deep innuendos. Without being noticed especially through his public forum works, being rather concerned with workshop sculpture, Spiru Sabiescu expressed himself in wood and stone, carved with craftsmanship. The human figure, of an accentuated verticality, represented, throughout time, the main subject approached in his archaic-inspired sculpture.
