CRITICAL REVIEW

The way towards the concrete three-dimensional composition, revealed (to us) as object and as installation and environment represents the effect of three-dimensionality’s conversion strategies applied to the bidimensionality of painting. The artist’s denial for trompe l’oeil traditional techniques, which are based on value contrast, and the intensification registered in the usage of visual metaphorizing techniques, based on relations between grids, that have the role to structure the sequence of the plans that make possible space virtualization, and on the relations between plane chromatic surfaces, lead towards the need of a crossing passage that mediates the transition from metaphor-space into real space. His first tries aim at the surface itself. By means of matter / substance accumulations the compositions incorporate the narrativeness and the development of the forms as a tool it needs to reach the concrete space. This relief becomes even more prominent by means of a process that consists in adding some concrete volumes by using the collage principle or by defining some support-plans presented in a compositional equilibrium achieved formally and chromatically. Inevitable, at the end the object turns to be self-contained maintaining his primary condition (of painting) by means of the artist’s interest for color, for the quality, texture properties and consistency of the materials he uses. Unlike other ready-made techniques, this is the case of an artist who searches for materials already used in preceding configurations. This makes possible knowing the history of these materials, all the other contexts that influenced their aspect and their semantic consistency. The artist also uses different fraying technologies, like metallurgy techniques or adding color technique. The pleasure of working with so many materials is the very reason that pleads for the construction of concrete objects. The need for spatial constructions has encouraged and stimulated him in his interest for compositional extent, installation, and, once he had become aware of the need to have aesthetic markers (both ephemeral and perennial) into the urban context, his interest for environment. His most recent projects, that took place outside his studio and outside any art gallery, has the role to develop exactly this extent (as those compositions created during his residency in Rome).
